2016 events

2015 marks 100 years since the progressive New Zealand born artist Edith Collier and a group of her contemporaries spent the summer sketching and painting in Bunmahon and the surrounding area.

A series of events are planned to celebrate Edith’s life and work in Bunmahon, Co. Waterford on Ireland’s south coast.

Film Night at Knockmahon NS
Friday October 21st at 7.30pm in Knockmahon NS, Bonmahon.
The short films “Edith Collier’s Bunmahon, a guided tour with Jim Cullinan” filmed and edited by Angela Mulcahy and “Bunmahon in Bygone times” by John Dwan will be show on the night.

Admission is €5 including light refreshments.
All proceeds will go to Knockmahon NS.*

Gala Weekend (past)
July 15th, 16th, and 17th 2016

Activities will include
Sand Art, A Period Garden Party, An Art Auction, and Much More!

Gala weekend to complete the celebrations commemorating a centenary since renowned New Zealand born artist Edith Collier visited Bunmahon on Waterford’s Copper Coast.

Edith Collier along with Gladys Reynell and a number of other artists attended a summer art school held by seminal Australian artist Margaret McPherson (later Preston) in 1914 and 1915.

Programme of events

Friday 15th

  • 1.00pm                     Welcome Edith’s family to Bunmahon, Knockmahon National School
  • 8.00pm                     Exhibition of Art by Orlaith Hamersley at the Copper Coast Geopark centre

Saturday 16th

  • 10am to 1pm          Sand art with the Art Hand on Bunmahon Beach
  • 1pm to 5pm            Period Garden party on Osborne Terrace
  • 1pm to 5pm          Walk in paintings on Osborne Terrace
  • 1pm to 5pm          Historical costume re-enactment
  • 3pm to 5pm           Historical costume competition

 

Sunday  17th

  • 3pm                           Memorial unveiling on Osborne Terrace
  • 4pm                           Movie premier and history talk.

Sean will guide you around the picturesque village of Bunmahon pausing at locations ideal for capturing a pirfect photograph image of a scene possibly painted by Edith 101 years ago.

“I am pleased to announce a photo tour of Bunmahon on Sat. 21st May 2016. This tour will entail retracing the steps of the reknowned New Zealand artist, Edith Collier, who spent some time in Bunmahon, capturing the beauty of the rugged coastline and it’s people.”

Edith Collier’s Bunmahon 1914 to 1915 (Past)

Exhibition of fine art reproductions

The New Zealand born artist Edith Collier visited Bunmahon Co. Waterford in 1914 and 1915 producing over 70 artworks during her stay, her portrait studies of the local people and her paintings, prints and sketches of their dwellings, and of the dramatic scenery in and around Bunmahon, are regarded as being among her finest works. 26 quality reproductions of art work created by Edith 100 years ago will be on exhibit until January 29th 2016 at the Ferrybank Library.

The Library is situated in the Ferrybank Shopping Centre on the north bank of the River Suir. The library is located on the ground floor adjacent to the Belmont Road (R711). Ample free car parking is available.

Edith Collier : A light among shadows

The films have been directed by film-maker Michael Heath and focus on Collier, an early modern painter who was born in Whanganui in 1885, and died aged 79.

A Light Among Shadows, made in 2007, is the story of Collier’s full life, while 2012’s Village by the Sea depicts her time spent living in Bunmahon, a fishing village in southern Ireland.

They examine negative responses to Collier’s work from her father, who burned many of her nude paintings, her critics and the general community.

The films have had sellout screenings at the New Zealand Film Festivals of 2007 and 2012, and have subsequently been shown at festivals in China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Ireland.

Looks Familiar (Past)

An art project by the students at Knockmahon NS Bunmahon.

Edith Collier the famous artist from New Zealand lived and painted in Bunmahon in 1914 and 1915, 100 years ago!

Some of the people and places painted by Edith still look familiar today.

During November 2015 the children from Knockmahon NS recaptured in their own way some of the people and places of Bunmahon.

The children’s art work was on exhibit in the school along with some reproductions of Edith Collier’s paintings on November 27th between 2 and 4pm for the parents, students, teachers, and community to enjoy.

The Copper Coast Geopark has been granted unprecedented permission to reproduce the Irish works of the 20th century New Zealand born modernist painter Edith Collier.

To celebrate 100 years since this inspirational artist lived and worked in Bunmahon and for the first time in Ireland you will have the opportunity to discover the beauty of Edith Collier’s work.

A collection of 26 high quality reproductions will be on exhibit at the Copper Coast Geopark auxiliary exhibition space, Knockmahon, Bunmahon, Co. Waterford on Friday September 18th 2015 and will run for 4 weeks.

A booklet showcasing some of the fine paintings created by Edith Collier while in Waterford will be available to purchase at the event.

Walk in the footsteps of Edith Collier (past)

Due to popular demand the guided walking tour of Bunmahon will be re-run on Saturday October 10th at 11am.
This 4km guided tour of Bunmahon will highlight some of the beautiful locations in Edit’s paintings.
Starting location: Copper Coast Auxiliary Exhibition Space on Saturday October 10th at 11am.
A visit to the Edith Collier exhibition followed by a guided walk of Bunmahon, visiting some of the beautiful locations painted by Edith Collier during her time in Bunmahon 100 years ago and still recognizable today, returning to the Copper Coast Geopark Visitors Centre.

Leaders: Jim Cullinane and Orlaith Hamersley.
Price includes complimentary bottle of water and snack bar.

The “Edith Collier’s Bunmahon” exhibition of historical painting reproductions will be on exhibit in the upstairs gallery from October 20th in the refurbished heritage building with art gallery & cafè overlooking the famous Tramore Bay.
